The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center wrapped up the Goat
Field Day on Saturday, April 9, 2005. This event was held in conjunction with the
training for the producers participating in the IFAFS (Initiative for Future Agriculture
and Food Systems) goat project.
Over 75 goat producers were in attendance for this event. The field day
involved expert lead discussions in the areas of starting a goat business, parasite
control, pasture/forage management, forming a co-op of producers, and record keeping and
marketing.
An afternoon session, held at the Experiment Station in Baker, offered
participants the opportunity to learn about live evaluation for marketing and body condition
scoring, hoof trimming and administering medications, and general kid management. This
training was designed not only to educate the producers in the state, but also to enable
the producers to network amongst themselves to expand their knowledge and strengthen the
goat industry in Louisiana as a whole.
