"A walk through the couple's nursery is like a walk through the United Nations of
plants," writes Better Homes and Gardens magazine about the diverse nursery of Southern
University Ag Center researcher Mila Berhane and husband, Andeab
Featured in the Garden Ideas and Outdoor Living edition, the Berhanes are
described as a plant-minded couple who nurtures a business and a marriage with
hardworking hands and caring hearts.
The article features a pictorial of the exotic plants grown in their
privately owned Greenhand Nursery. The couple spends about 50 hrs a week in the three-acre
nursery, planting and caring for houseplants, flowers, trees, herbs, gingers, and ethnic
vegetables. The nursery consists of two 30'x90' greenhouses and a plethora of plants. "
(The plants) just keep popping up everywhere," Mrs. Berhane tells BHG. Once these plants
are grown to perfection they are sold at the Red stick Farmer's Market in Baton Rouge.
The Berhanes also provide BHG readers with tips for great gardening
results in a separate article, "7 steps to Gardening Success."
"Andeab and Mila have put their superior knowledge of plant nurturing into
practice" says SU Ag Center Chancellor Leodrey Williams. "Mila brings the same level of care
and enthusiasm to her job at the Southern University Ag Center. We congratulate the Berhanes
on their outstanding achievements."
Mrs. Berhane is a senior research associate in sustainable plant and animal production at the
Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center.
