Did you know the average person gains between eight to 10 pounds during the holidays? With
the added hustle and bustle of shopping, the employee Christmas party you must attend, and
the holiday cookies and fudge that you either receive as gift, or are sitting in the employee
break room, it's almost inevitable to gain weight. You also can't forget the hectic shopping
schedule that knocks you off your regular gym routine.
This year, the Southern University Ag Center has tips to help you gain pleasure, not pounds
during the upcoming holiday season. Before the holidays hit, set some reasonable goals
for yourself. This may not be the time to think about weight loss, but just being in
control and making wise food decisions can help.
Enduring Holiday Parties
Holiday parties are special and often times a once-a-year treat. You can
maintain a healthful approach if you plan ahead.
Scope out the food table before making your choices. Decide which foods you
can't live without and which ones are easy passes.
Sample small portions of your favorites. You will give the flavor without
the excess.
Work the party. Visit with old friends, and try to make new ones. It is
hard to eat and talk at the same time.
Go easy on the alcohol which can increase your food intake and add unwanted
empty calories.
Working It Out During the Holidays
Physical activity can help relieve the stress of the holidays, so start now
to develop a more active lifestyle. Shoot for 30 minutes of aerobic activity most days of the
week - Take a walk after lunch, walk the dog, or walk around the mall before holiday
shopping. Use this planned time to relax, organize what you need to do and generally
recharge your spirits.
In addition to keeping activity in your routine, remember to stay hydrated.
With the colder weather, you lose water as your body stays warm, so include plenty of fluids
- 8 to 12 cups per day is a good start. So remember to exercise your stress away and the
extra calories of the holiday season.
