Holiday tips to help you de-stress before you go into distress

At holiday time, it's a good idea to de-stress before you go into distress. You can do this by first asking yourself what the holiday season means to you.

"Often, Americans have an idealized vision of the holidays - so idealized in fact that it might not even exist! So, begin by setting realistic expectations about what you want the holidays to mean, what you have, what you can afford, what you can do," says SU Ag Center Extension Agent Karen Stevens.

Many families have used a medical first aid kit at one time or another, especially if children are present in the home. The First Aid Kit for Stress can offer some of the same benefits as having a medical first aid kit, particularly during the holiday season when many individuals are in need of immediate relief of stress. The stress first aid kit offers two methods: using the "five senses" and the "four Hs". The "five senses" help individuals to focus on immediate pleasant experiences and the "four Hs" provide healing methods which require more effort to achieve.

The five senses: easy to remember and always available

Sound - Pamper yourself with peaceful experiences of quietness. Find music that calms you or energizes you.

Touch - Relax with a bath or shower. Provide or receive a massage. Exchange hugs with loved ones.

Sight - Explore things that are pleasing to your eyes and calm you.

Taste - Make an effort to eat your favorite comfort food. Remember comfort food is about quality not quantity.

Smell - Indulge in refreshing relaxing scents. Explore for your favorite scent in candles, lotions, etc.

The four Hs of stress relief

Heart - Explore things that make your heart feel happy. Laugh at least three times a day and smile often.

Hands - Helping is a great way to uplift your spirit. Volunteer or try a new craft. During the holiday season volunteering is just as valuable as a financial donation.

Health - Concentrate on wellness both physically and mentally. Engage in exercise and good nutrition. Avoid overeating during the holidays. Eat smaller portions and only one serving.

Holy - Explore the spiritual side of life according to your own personal beliefs.
