Family and Youth Expo Inspires Excellence

The Southern University Ag Center held its annual Family and Youth Exposition June 17-19. The event, which culminates the 2010 youth development program activities statewide, brought more than 300 youth together for a two-day education, fun-filled experience. The theme for this year's Expo was, "Inspiring Youth With Tools for Achieving Excellence." Southern University Ag Center's specialist, agents, and researchers delivered a memorable Expo program. Retired Lt. General Russel L. Honoré was keynote speaker. He advised youth to aim high for achievement.

"These youth are participants of Southern University Ag Center's Youth Educational Support (YES) programs across the state," said Wanda Burke, youth development specialist. "We enjoy offering the children the opportunity to explore life on a college campus. This is a seed-planting process that will someday inspire participating youth to attend college, preferably Southern University. Hopefully, they have gained the knowledge to create a better quality of life for themselves and motivate others."

On Thursday, youth got acquainted and enjoyed Funtastic activities on the grounds of the Southern University Ag Center. Educational seminars and workshops which focused on technology, hand washing, juvenile justice, 4H, poultry, and experience making scents were held throughout the day on Friday. The event ended Saturday morning with awards and recognitions.

The youth also participated in illustrated talk, motivational speaking, and quiz bowl competitions.
