8th Annual Procurement Conference Exceeds Expectation
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center held its 8th Annual "Connecting Businesses with Contracts"
Procurement Conference, April 10. The event which was open to all small business owners, contractors, and the public, attracted more than 300 individuals
to the Southern University Baton Rouge campus.The conference brought together more than 300 potential and existing contractors, entrepreneurs and
government agencies with contracting officers and purchasing agents to the Southern University Baton Rouge campus.

Hibiscus jelly new on Louisiana menu
The SU Ag center is constantly conducting research on alternative plants with health and economic benefits to the citizens of
Louisiana. Hibiscus, one of such plants is reaping health and economic benefits following years of intensive research. Hibiscus, known for its medicinal
effects in lowering high blood pressure, is also yielding other products of economic impact as local restaurants take it to another level by using its
jelly in dishes such as in the stuffed pork loin with cherries, charizo and hibiscus jelly.

SU Ag Center Offers Youth Cooking School
This summer, the Southern University Ag Center will sponsor a youth cooking school entitled, "Creating Healthy Enjoyable
Foods" (C.H.E.F.) for students ages 9-14. Session 1 for ages 9 -11 will be held July 9th -13th and Session 2 for ages 12-14 will be held July 23rd - 27th.

Louisiana Small Farm Conference Enhances Economy
The Louisiana Small farm conference took off yesterday with inspirational farm tours from the SU Ag Center across multiple
parishes. The event gained momentum today with opening session presided over by Gina E. Eubanks, Vice Chancellor for Extension. Also bringing greetings
to participants were Leodrey Williams, Chancellor; Adell Brown, Vice Chancellor for Research, and Rene P. Simon, Director, LA Agricultural Finance
Authority, Louisiana Dept. of Agriculture. Dr. Dawn Mellion-Patin, Extension Specialist and conference organizer, received the more than 50 small
farmers from Louisiana and beyond with utmost enthusiasm.

SU Ag Center Works with St. Landry Parish to Start a Vegetable Garden
The SU Ag Center recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with St. Landry Parish Government to start a garden
project that will enhance the quality of life of the community while saving the government some money. Work started on the garden project recently. The
project is designed to teach prisoners responsibility, while putting healthy fresh fruits and vegetables on their table is taking root near the St.
Landry Parish airport.

SU Ag Center Livestock Encourages Youth to Excel
The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center concluded its 69th Annual Livestock Show on March 3 with
more than 400 participants from across the state. During the three-day event, youth from across the state had the opportunity to display winning animals
contending for top prizes. Winners of state champions in various breeds of beef and dairy cattle, hogs, sheep, lamb, and goats received rosettes,
banners and ribbons.
