USDA Designates Louisiana a Primary Natural Disaster Area
On October 13, 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) designated all 64 parishes of Louisiana as natural disaster areas due to the combined effects of
severe storms, tornadoes, severe spring flooding, Tropical Storm Lee, widespread drought and excessive heat that began Jan. 1, 2011, and continues. This designation provides emergency
farm loans to help producers recover from production and physical losses due to natural disasters.

Southern University System's Tobacco-free Policy, now in Effect
Effective January 2, 2012, the Southern University System enforced its 100% tobacco-free policy. At the Southern University Ag Center, from where the policy
originated, we have removed smoking receptacles, posted signs, and continue to educate our constituents regarding the adopted policy. As we continue to expand on the implementation of
the policy, we will keep you abreast.

SU Ag Center Spotlighted in National Newsletter
Baton Rouge, LA - The Southern University Ag Center was spotlighted in the December issue of USDA National Organic Program Insider Newsletter. The spotlight
followed a September visit to Louisiana by Miles McEvoy, Deputy Administrator of USDA's National Organic Program (NOP). During his visit, Dr. C. Reuben Walker gave McEvoy a guided tour of

Brown Named Vice Chancellor for Research
Dr. Adell Brown, Jr., Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, SU Agricultural Center, has been named Executive Vice Chancellor and Vice Chancellor
for Research at Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Dr. Adell Brown will replace Dr. Kirkland E. Mellad who retired from the position of Vice Chancellor
for Research on December 31, 2011.

Claims for Black Farmer Discrimination Case Against USDA
The Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund announced on November 9, 2011 that the period for claimants in the lawsuit to file their
claims to begin on November 14, 2011 and last for six (6) months. On October 27, 2011, Judge Paul Friedman in the U.S. District Court approved the settlement for Pigford II lawsuit
filed by black farmers against the USDA (otherwise known as "In re Black Farmers Discrimination Litigation")
